Dental Implant Procedure
Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implants have become quite popular over the past decade. Dental implants offer an alternative to those who need replacement as well as restorative dentistry. Prior to dental implants, crowns, bonding and dental plates were common ways to replace/ improve the appearance of existing teeth.
The dental implant procedure can be quite extensive depending upon the situation. The dental implant procedure may be quite routine if no bone reconstruction or gum repair is required. However, if bone reconstruction or gum repair is needed the dental implant process becomes more extensive as well as costly.
What Dental Implant Surgery Entails
What dental implant surgery entails can be explained quite easily. Dental implant surgery involves removing any existing teeth and preparing the area where the implant will be placed. Once that is completed the implant can be inserted into the existing bone and surrounding gum tissue. Dental implants are held in place by screws. Dental implants are considered permanent. However, problems can arise if an implant becomes loose or possibly comes out it must be repaired as soon as possible.
Recovery Period
Many may wonder is there a recovery period after dental implant surgery. The question can best be answered by saying yes there is a short recovery period after dental implants are inserted. Gums may be tender and swelling can occur after dental implant surgery. However, usually over the counter pain relievers will help with any pain. The dentist may prescribe a prescription pain medicine to get the patient through the first few days after implant surgery.
Following dental implant surgery, the patient may experience some discomfort for a few days however it should clear up fairly quickly. If any unusual complications occur such as excessive swelling, bleeding gums or sever pain then it best to contact the dentist immediately. Normally within about 2-3 days the patient feels better can can pretty much return to life as usual. Keep in mind this depends upon the depth of surgery performed. Some cases may be more complicated than others.
Finally, dental implants can give a person a whole new lease on life. Implants can improve ones smile and restore lost self esteem. Dental implants have become more popular than conventional crowns.
